Our district is working hard to show and model to our students how important reading is! We talk with students all through out the day about the books that we are reading. It is helping to get the students excited about books. They are constantly checking out books from our classroom libraries. There is real excitement as I watch the students discussing books with each other. As a teacher, I love listening to this and to them recommending books to one another. I use my classroom library for mentor texts for writing and language lessons. Students check classroom library books out for AR reading, independent reading, and book clubs. Having more books in the classroom library will give the students more choice and keep them reading. Our students only get to visit the school library once a week. Many of the students say they are glad they can check books out of the classroom library because they don't have to wait until library day to check out another book. When asked what having a library in our classroom means to them, one student replied, "It means I get to read ALL the time." That is the reading culture we want in our district. More classroom library books means more reading choices for our students. More reading choices means more readers. More readers means lifelong learners.
