Many of my seventh graders are reluctant to talk about their struggles with fitting in, being accepted and accepting others, and making hard choices. Literature is a way to open up the lines of communication about these hard topics, without being too personal. Students can analyze the story and the choices the characters make, which is safer than speaking about themselves. By doing so, they are practicing the kind of thinking that they will need to use to make their own big decisions in life. Uglies, a book by Scott Westerfeld, is great for 7th graders, because students can see bits of themselves in the characters, the situations, and the choices that need to be made. Within the story, as characters face adversity and learn about tolerance and acceptance, my 7th graders can begin to think, discuss, and write about how tolerance is a necessity in our world.
