Students need to know how to problem solve, create, design, and engineer to compete in the future jobs market. Research shows that young learners learn best through hands-on, project based learning activities. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum and supplies will greatly benefit young learners as they cultivate skills needed to develop into creative, bright learners thus molding them for the wonderful futures in head of them. These hands-on STEM materials are not provided in my classroom, and I think they are needed! Imagine the engagement of a six year old as he or she has the opportunity to design, build, and write about the creations they imagine using these supplies! The possibilities are endless, so let's help the children STEM it up! One way we can encourage creativity and critical thinking is by providing the children with project based task cards. These cards will challenge a student to use materials like the magnetic blocks, snowflake building blocks, and straw builders to solve problems using math and engineering processes. For instance, I have a story in which the main character needs to build a safer perch to live in. In response to the story the students will plan, design and build a new, safer perch for the character. The above mentioned materials will come in useful for that activity.
