These materials will be a great addition to my classroom. They will increase self-esteem, make children feel a sense of achievement and success in what they construct. Last year I taught a student who was very quiet. He couldn't identify numbers or letters and could barely write his own name. When he went to the block area his whole attitude changed. He would talk, he would share what he did with everyone, he would offer his help to other children who weren't that good at blocks. To get him to engage in math talk I'd ask "how many blocks did you use to build that?" or "how many blocks high is your tower?". The blocks center allowed him to make friends and be good at something in a classroom setting. Blocks also provide an area to increase social interaction between peers. Blocks also expose children a variety of learning opportunities that include math, engineering, social, emotional, and physical skills. Having a verity of tools can encourage all students to play in the blocks including girls who would normally be drawn to dramatic play or the art studio. Blocks also help students with counting and cardinality in a fun way. This is the ability to understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. When students are counting objects, they can say the number names in the standard order, and pair each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. This is an important kindergarten math standard. This year, unfortunately, my class was not supplied with any materials for the block area. The block area is a huge part of preparing my students for academic and social success. With your donation, I can provide my students with a rich learning environment.
