My district's current curriculum no longer fully addresses what my sixth grade students are expected to learn since the adoption of the new science standards (NGSS) in 2013; in order to appropriately cover the content for they grade level, my students need more books and resources available to them. I am asking for a complete Earth and Space Science Book Collection, as well as a set of nine books on Conservation, a set of four STEAM Jobs You'll Love Books, and five books including Women of Steel and Stone 22 Inspirational Architects, Engineers, and Landscape Designers. I am also asking for three Explore Genetics Kits and two Explore Roller Coasters Kits. My students will work collaboratively this year to research concepts related to life, physical, and earth science using the the titles I have selected, and then become members of simulated "think tanks" to perform a specific task from the science kits in order to apply their newfound knowledge. First, students will read to learn about a concept-such as genetics. Next, they will split into smaller groups to complete a hands on task. Finally, they will present their finished project to the class, sharing their findings, new understanding, and remaining questions to the group.
