Middle school math is quite a transition for students. I have integrated an interactive notebook into my classroom, which has helped students flourish in understanding these new concepts. Interactive notebooks accommodate multiple learning styles at one time in (and out of) the classroom. An interactive notebook works as a textbook for students that is theirs. Not only are they taking beneficial notes, practicing, and reflecting on material, but they are also using that information as they work on future activities. Students are going back and reviewing the prior pages repeatedly and therefore building exposure to the material each time. Whether you do teacher input activities as a whole group or as a small group, student output activities give students the ability to show exactly where they are in their understanding of the subject. We are requesting paper, pencils, files and tissues. Flexible seating has many benefits as students are more comfortable, allowing them to focus for longer periods of time, which leads to higher academic achievement. Changing some of my chairs will also help improve behavior as students are less disruptive and are able to burn off energy throughout the day. With flexible seating, students aren’t tied down to one desk or seating arrangement. Throughout the day, they are sitting with different children. I have seen new friendships grow from this and I feel like it has only brought my students, and my class as a whole, closer.
