Our class recently started growing our own herbs and lettuce in an effort to help middle school students learn about nutrition and better health habits. This has led to a new energy amongst middle schoolers (a student who has had major behavioral issues was asking me last week for some lettuce). Utilizing these herbs to infuse water and get more students hydrated will make a difference in the academics and overall health of many students in our school. Similar to a coffee shop and how they use refillable mugs, the water bottles will be used by students to fill up on naturally infused water each day they are at school. As a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) teacher, I will have students pick herbs and mix them in our 5 gallon jugs at the end of each day. The following day, these jugs will be placed in the hallway for students with their water bottles to fill up and drink during class. Peer influence can be a negative or a positive. In this case, we are wanting to continue to change the attitude toward nutrition and health and, thus, start to see hydration as a positive thing for students to do.
