A class set of the book, A Wizard of Earthsea, will allow my students to interact with varying writing styles and genres. Having access to new materials always engages students at a higher level. They feel a greater investment with the project and accept that they are the first to experience it. The book that I have chosen offers students many different themes and philosophical ideas to explore. A boy who is given power beyond his years and missteps when he goes to far. The rest of the story relates to students who have suffered a wrong or seek to correct a misstep they themselves have taken. It is also important to reflect on the author. Ursula K. Le Guin has been compared to Tolkien and Lewis in terms of her literary world. Few people and fewer students have been given access to her work and unique insight into the human condition.
