My students are 7 and 8 years old. They have a hard time sitting still for an extended period of time. Also, research shows that some of the benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. Physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. I believe that having these balance ball chairs as an option for seating for the students in the classroom will improve their performance as students! Instead of seeing the kids rock dangerously in their chair and possibly fall causing injury, I would much rather see them sitting safely in a chair that allows them to move around and get the wiggles out, but in a way that is not distracting to those around them.
