The novel True Grit is a classic Western novel, but with a significant modern-day twist. It is an adventure novel, like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, only this story is told from the perspective of a 14-year-old girl searching for her father's killer. By reading about the American frontier of the 19th Century, students will gain some perspective on the meaning of courage, resilience and perseverance, both in that time period and in the present day. It will also expose them to skillful writing in regard to plot, character and tone. True Grit is an under-read gem. Providing this novel to high school students will hopefully make a true impact on these young readers.
