My 72 reading students are 5th graders from three classes in a southern Maine school district. Our students come from a wide variety of economic households with close to 75% receiving free or reduced lunch. They are amazing kids with very different backgrounds, interests and abilities. They each come in with a genuine desire to learn and to be accepted for who they are and where they are at. The culture I establish in my classroom allows for them to flourish. I love teaching 5th graders because they are curious, can do great work independently, can hold interesting and insightful conversations, and they still love their teacher! From teaching for 20 years, I strongly believe that equity is how we will have all students be successful at learning.
