My classroom is definitely unique. I’m an art teacher working with some of the most challenging students. They represent many ethnic groups, 84% qualify for free and reduced lunch, some lack visible parental support and have not performed well in school. Nevertheless, they are the most capable, compassionate and giving people I know. One recent example is when my students heard about the suffering in Haiti. Without hesitation, they sold their beautiful oil pastel pictures and donated all of the proceeds to help with the relief efforts.
