My students write ... and write ... and write. In the 21st century, communication is key to success as a student and as a person. Yet, I teach at a school that is so crowded that we've had to disassemble our computer labs to make way for academic classrooms. Teachers resort to signing up for computers in cases on wheels ... if they can sign up in time before 20 other teachers have filled in all the available time slots. My students' need for Chromebooks is urgent!
Freshmen writers need Chromebooks to learn to compose at a keyboard. No more writing in a Composition Book and then reluctantly transferring what's written. A Chromebook gives young writers spelling, grammar, and formatting practice, all skills that need to become automatic. Freshmen can become more willing and fluent writers with their fingers flying across a keyboard.
The students in The Hero's Journey class have a different set of issues. These senior boys have struggled in English in previous years. They frequently suffer from varying degrees dysgraphia. Their own handwriting is illegible to them. Imagine their frustration when their own thoughts are incomprehensible! I want to remove that barrier. A Chromebook can free them from a source of perceived failure. And failure hurts!
The students who study Women's Literature are -- frequently -- a scholarly group. With Chromebooks, I can teach them how to access data bases for required research presentations. They are university bound and need to deepen their research skills. Wikipedia is not going to cut it at the universities they hope to attend. Delving into data bases will give them opportunities to satisfy their curiosity in deep wells of academia.
