We can't learn science without doing science, and we can't do biology without living things, and we can't experience the true nature of science without experimenting. The first unit is going to help us explore the different types of organisms on the tree of life, how they're related to each other, how they're different, and what it takes to be and to stay alive. This order will supply us with two classes worth of different easily maintained plants, as well as a few protists and animals to observe and take good kind care of. The carnivorous and other plants will be grown under different experimental conditions (light, water, temperature, nutrient variation), and measured with scales, rulers, observed for visual changes, and under the microscope -- all to determine their needs for growth and homeostasis. The tardigrades are microscopic aquatic animals that can survive under extreme conditions, so we will subject them to different light, temperature, moisture levels -- again, to experiment with their growth, homeostasis, and reproduction. The protists will be studied under the microscope for movement, structure, and again, needs. The mitotic and meiotic slides will be perfect for studying different types of cell division, structures, and will introduce us to genetics. When we are finished, the students will get to take their organisms home. Many of these supplies will last generation after generation of students going through my class.
