I have requested a class set of Chromebooks as well as the appropriate management software and charging stations for my middle school students. These Chromebooks will become the main tool for our classroom. Students will create and maintain a virtual interactive notebook through an online drive, which will be used on a daily basis. Despite the fact that my students do not know life without smartphones or WiFi, many are not literate in educational uses for technology. Adults intuitively "Google" just about any question they can think of and have seemingly infinite resources in a fraction of a second. My heart broke when an in class project revealed that more than half of my students didn't know how to use search engines to research the most basic topics, nor did they know how to attach emails, share, or even create documents. Computer classes have been all but eliminated and the skills many of us take for granted are simply not being taught. If this project is successful, I will teach my students how to use computers to make learning easier, and hopefully help them to develop lifelong skills that will prepare them for the future and instill a love of learning.
