I am requesting materials that will provide my students with the opportunity to practice their blossoming engineering and math skills. They will learn to collect their materials and follow simple plans, as well as to create their own designs. My students will also learn vital social skills by planning, working, and creating together. "Play is the highest form of research." Albert Einstein The Create a Chain Reaction Set is a set of materials that includes ramps, balls, spinners, and balances that will enable my first grade students to create a Rube Goldberg machine. It will help them meet the Next Generation Science Standards of 1-PS2-1 which require them to plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an objects and 1-PS2-2. which requires them to analyze data to determine if a design solution works as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a push or a pull. The Following Direction Building Sets and Bolt Construction set will help meet most of the Common Core Geometry Standards. My students will combine three-dimensional shapes to build "real" objects such as cars, planes, animals, and simple machines. They will have to follow directions to build certain objects and have the freedom to design their own creations. They will work both independently and in teams, which help improve their math vocabulary. As a teacher, one of the greatest gifts I can give to my students is to create a love of learning in them. The best way I can do this is by providing fun, creative materials for them and giving them the time to play and through this play they learn.
