This year, my students have been studying hummingbirds. We have learned all about what they eat, where they sleep- we have even written a book about them! Students have been doing a lot of research both on their own and asking questions and skyping with to a National Geographic Explorer, Anusha Shakar, who studies hummingbirds. The more they researched, the more concerned they grew about how deforestation was impacting hummingbirds. They want to build a hummingbird garden so that we can give our local hummingbirds a home and learn more about them. However, in order to attract hummingbirds to our area and make our hummingbird garden a reality, we need a variety of hummingbird feeders and hummingbird friendly plants. Our hummingbird garden will give my students the change to put a wide variety of environmental science skills into practice and allow them to take action to protect our local hummingbird population.
