As the school counselor at a Title I school, my biggest priority is ensuring that they feel safe, happy and loved when they are in our care to allow them to be the best students they can be! As a counselor, however, I am not given any sort of budget to work with, so the games and supplies I use with my students all come from my paycheck. I would love to be able to provide them with some essential tools that can help them thrive both in and outside of the classroom. I will use the floor rug to help them learn, play and explore together inside the Counseling Room. During Lunch Bunch (an alternative recess space in the Counseling Room for children who may get overwhelmed on the playground), the rug will be used as a place to play board games, make friends and relax. I plan on using the faces on the rug to informally support their emotional growth during these times. Additionally, this rug will be instrumental in my small counseling groups, which include specialized interventions for students who struggle with anxiety, behavior problems, ADHD and social skills. We will start and end each group with a small community circle on the carpet, which helps them transition from school to group and back again. We will also use this space to play games and do floor projects that support their social-emotional development. The fidgets, alternative seating and bands I have included will be used to support children inside of their individual classrooms. Many students who have ADHD, sensory processing issues and/or anxiety do not learn well at a traditional desk, as those do not attend to their more specific somatic needs. These will help accommodate those needs and ultimately help them learn and retain more information.
