The academic expectations for Kindergarten students continue to increase each year. The demands to work at tables and sit in chairs during the day work for some students, but not for all. Flexible seating within the classroom will help provide a warm, exciting environment. It will offer the students a choice to sit and learn in a more comfortable way for them. A comfortable student will stay calm, focused and productive throughout the day. Flexible seating will allow students to have more control throughout the day in choosing where/how they work. It will allow students to change their location and positions as needed. In Kindergarten, we are constantly moving around and working in various spots throughout the classroom. Many students choose to work together on the floor in small group settings. The soft seats will help students feel more at ease when sitting on the hard classroom floor. Flexible seating also helps improve some of those impulsive student behaviors. The wobble stools will allow students to still sit at tables if they choose so, while being able to "wiggle" or move about without causing an obvious distraction unlike chairs that make noise with each movement. For other students, a simple wobble cushion on top of their chair will provide that sensory feel to keep them focused on the instruction taking place. By providing my students with flexible seating options, I am excited to see the rewards! Students will show an increase in on-task behaviors, be more motivated to learn and develop strong work habits which will have a positive impact on student growth for the whole child.
