It may seem that bathroom rugs are a silly request for a classroom. Although it may seem silly, these rugs will be the beginning of implementing flexible seating in my classroom. These bathroom rugs and clipboards will eliminate the struggle to convince students to stay in their seats! Research has shown that students are more motivated to learn if they can choose how they learn. I cannot begin to explain how hard it is to keep a five year old seated for an 8 hour day. My plan is to eliminate the excessive use of chairs and tables in my classroom by having students select a rug and a clipboard for their workspace during the day. These rugs take up a lot less space then tables and chairs and will open up my small classroom for more room for activities and learning! The great thing about the rugs is students decide how they want to learn by laying down, sitting criss-cross or sitting on their knees. The clipboards will provide a hard surface for students to complete their projects on the floor. I have seen this system implemented in a kindergarten classroom in Tennessee and it has become a game changer for his classroom!
