I run a resource room at a 6th-8th grade middle school. This year I will teach two sections of modified math and three sections of modified writing. Of all of the middle schools in the district we have the population with the highest special education needs, the lowest socio-economic status and the greatest number of students of color. This should allow us more funding but instead we are constantly left behind when it comes to upkeep. Our goal as a staff is to engage students in learning so we can keep them in school and have them find academic success. However, it is tough to have students engaged when their environment is unappealing. I want my students to enjoy coming into my class as well as feel safe and comfortable so that they can find success even when all odds are against them.
