I want my students to LOVE reading. With all of the standardized testing that has taken place over the years, the love of reading has dissipated for some students. I have been doing research on the importance of read alouds, specifically of picture books. After doing that research, my goal for the 2017-2018 year in 5th grade is to read ONE picture book a day. I would like to create a picture book library where the book characters are diverse, cover important and relevant topics, and can connect to curriculum. I want these books to be just enjoyable to read. I believe picture books are for everyone. Sometimes they can get lost in the upper grades but picture books can do SO much! They can build community in the classroom, teach important lessons, and create empathy and understanding. Together we as a class can have a shared experience. While reading aloud to students, I am modeling fluency, expression, and, most importantly, reading for pleasure which is what reading is all about! I feel that incorporating this small act of reading every day will help fuel a love of reading.
