Moving is part of being a kid and is something we should encourage! When students misbehave or "get the wiggles" it's not that they're deciding not to learn, but rather using movement to refocus... Research has found that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Research proves that simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially. This is why I am in desperate need of flexible seating this year. I know my kiddos will truly appreciate it for many years to follow. I currently have exercise balls for three students, which have replaced their chairs, and four stand-up desks. I want to create more options, which is why I have included four wobble chairs on my wish list. This will create an outlet for the high energy kids while still keeping them on task. For my kiddos who like the floor, I have included floor seats and comfy seats because at the moment I only have a couple floor pillows. Last year, I had a student who loved doing work on the floor, but I always worried about her on the hard surface all day. My hope is with this project being funded I will no longer worry if a kid chooses being on the floor for the day.
