Our students need exercise equipment that will allow them to move while learning. Dr Howard Gardner, a professor from Harvard University, found in one study that a group of children, from birth to age 4, were operating at "genius level", while the same group of children at age 20 dropped to operating at only 10% genius level. Why? From birth to age 4, children are constantly exploring, playing, and learning in a state of constant motion. When they enter school, however, the innate ability to explore the world around them is hindered by the traditional focus of uniformity, control, sitting in a desk. Don’t we want all students operating at the genius level? The desk cycles and exercise bikes will be used during teacher instruction times as well as independent work time. They will be quiet enough that students whose bodies need constant stimulation will be able to sit and pedal while learning. The other equipment will focus on strengthening the core, balance, and fitness, which research shows are all imperative to improve reading, critical thinking, organization, focus, behavior, and academic achievement. These activities develop the part of the brain where executive functions occur. If this area of the brain is underdeveloped, students may have more problems with focus, fidgeting, and learning. Your generous donation will improve the lives of 52 children by improving memory, concentration, and positive mood; which will allow them to become lifelong learners who are working up to their genius level.
