The novel, Wonder, by R. J. Palacio is a moving story about a boy with a facial deformity who enters school in the fifth grade and faces isolation as his peers struggle with acceptance, kindness, and courage. This book explores themes of bullying, peer pressure, and compassion. The topic is extremely relevant at this age level, the book is well-written, and it evokes strong emotions, all of which will engage students in reading. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.... Indeed it is the only thing that every has." (Margaret Mead) This novel study will help students to develop empathy for others, especially those with differences and disabilities, which can change our world! This is especially important in our school which has a high population of special education students, including many deaf and hearing impaired students, and in our world, which is increasingly and wonderfully diverse. Reading this novel together as a class at the start of the year will help to create a strong, caring classroom community and will help students to understand how their words and actions can impact others. Hopefully, as a result of this book, students will be inspired and empowered to stand up for others. This novel will also be used to develop critical reading skills. Students will be able to read independently and with others, while they explore essential literary concepts, including point of view, character development, mood, tone, figurative language and plot elements. Throughout the novel study, students will write in response to their reading and participate in discussion groups with their peers, supporting their ideas with evidence from the novel. All of this will help students to grow as a community of readers and writers.
