This project will provide games that give my students opportunities to develop their social skills and learn to use language to communicate with one another as they work collaboratively. Many of my students live below the poverty line and their only access to hands-on games and activities happens at school. These games are not only rich in learning opportunities that will support my students' academic skills such as, counting, listening, speaking and increasing vocabulary, but will also provide opportunities to practice cooperation, self control, and problem solving skills as the students build community and friendship within our first grade classroom. Materials such as Legos, Gears, blocks and Lincoln Logs will go a long way to activate my students' creativity, while math games and Jenga will require them to solve problems. Stare, HedBanz and Go Fish will work on their memory and communication skills as they work cooperatively toward a goal. I am looking forward to seeing the excitement they show toward learning and the progress they make daily as they incorporate the skills they learn from playing games and having fun.
