COVID-19 has created many road blocks in education, especially in science. While our whole subject structure is to provide kids with hands-on opportunities to discover the world of science and its applications, COVID-19 has made this impossible. With health and safety restrictions, sanitation protocols, and spacing, it is difficult to provide students with the experiences that hook kids into loving science and STEM... until now! Before, we would provide labs with lots of moving parts, materials and consumable items. With our new hybrid schedule in place with safety restrictions, we would not be able to safely sanitize each item between periods. With our main source of heightened learning disabled, we have to look towards technology. There are only so many internet based labs out there, and they tend to become a dry learning experience after a while. Which was a novelty before has become a routine chore during online learning. This is where VR headsets come in! VR technology has become more and more prevalent in the STEM community, creating an immersive, virtual lab environment of unlimited potential. Online learning is the perfect vessel for providing students a virtual lab environment with health and safety restrictions in places. Labs can include building a rocket on the moon while learning about physics, a high tech laboratory with unlimited chemicals to conduct chemistry experiments, traveling back in time to learn about the history of the earth as students walk with dinosaurs, or surf on a sound wave as students learn about amplitude. It is endless! Heath and safety is still our top priority. With only 10-15 students in class at a time, each student would have their own VR headset in class. It will also provide easy clean up, as teachers will only have 10-15 head sets to sanitize at a time.
