Although students can learn engineering from books and lectures, real engineering happens when they get their hands dirty. This is especially true with Civil Engineering where the students learn how to examine and classify soil (dirt) that can be used to support buildings, like their school or house. When the projects can be as close to real engineering that happens in the industry, the students are not only more engaged but are learning real-world skills that they can translate into their future careers. The products I have selected are soil sieves which are required for real soil analysis and classification. In order for the experience to truly be hands-on, I have ordered 4 sets so the students can each get experience with the testing devices. I also requested one additional sieve to allow the students to attempt an additional soil test for clay/silt.
