A flexible learning environment will make a difference in my students' lives by giving them a sense of ownership and enable them to become more invested in their own education. Students will feel a greater sense of responsibility for themselves and their academic success when given the chance to exercise power over how and where they learn within the classroom. Ideally, this boosts academic performance and student engagement, motivation, creativity and cooperation. Students learn best when they have some control over their environment. My plan is to replace student desks and chairs and implement a variety of seating choices for comfort and flexibility. I will need stools, balance balls, wedge and cubed soft seats, and cubbies for my students to organize/store their supplies. These items will allow students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and position as needed. These adaptable furniture pieces will enable me to rearrange on a daily basis to better suit my students’ learning needs. Having these pieces in my classroom will help me teach my students how to make good, purposeful choices in their learning thus promoting independent, responsible individuals. I will be able to create a room that is “ours” not “mine”. This will give students that sense of ownership in their learning which I believe makes all the difference in a student's growth. The bonus of having these items is being comfortable somehow allows students to stay vested in the task, and their behavior is equally positive.
