These chess sets will provide an opportunity for me to facilitate a girls' chess club during lunch recess. Chess is an unknown game to most elementary-school aged kids, and the level of deep thinking that chess requires and develops will be a great benefit to my group of girls. These 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade girls will learn to play chess, develop strategies, and forge friendships. Playing chess will deepen the girls' skills in problem-solving, planning, and creativity. It will also develop interpersonal skills, and allow the girls to build better friendships and relationships with their peers. Playing chess may possibly inspire these girls to go into STEAM careers in the future.
