As I began thinking about my assignment in a middle school self-contained classroom, I remembered where I was in middle school. I remembered how much I loved switching classrooms and changing buildings. That sense of movement manifested itself as independence and exploration within me and my peers.
I am in a self contained classroom; my students will spend the overwhelming majority of their day with me. Immediately, I envisioned ways to create an intentional sense of movement in my room. A sensory-based classroom will allow my students to be themselves and flourish at the same time. My classroom will be a safe space where my students are encouraged to take risks and try new strategies that will aid in their own learning. My students will use bands, cushions, and alternative seats to remain stimulated and allow them to rock or bounce as they work. Fidget toys, like bands and stress balls, will allow their fingers to fidget so that they can stay on task.I have created a list of essentials that will foster different atmospheres within my four walls. With the help of manipulatives, alternative seating, and classroom visuals, I hope to create a more stimulating environment. Please help me create this environment in any way that you can.
