It has been stated that redesigning a classroom or implementing unassigned flexible seating is a shift in both structure and teaching philosophy -- an entire mindset shift. The shift in education is to bring it into the 21st Century with the understanding that today's students have so much more freedom than we did while in school. They need to be able to move, explore and learn in a variety of ways to match their mindset as well as their differences. One way I am planning on using the flexible seating is when the students are doing Guided Reading groups as well as Silent reading so they can be comfortable and be able to focus on reading instead of how uncomfortable it is on bare floors or on a hard chair.
