Colored pieces of varying shapes enable pupils to visualize discrete atoms combining to make molecules. They can use the pieces to represent elements, each color representing a specific element, and show, by combining pieces, how compounds are made of more than one element. The visual and tactile aspect will make the concepts more real and we can then go on using the letter symbols of elements. This project will make an abstract concept more concrete for middle schoolers who are still at the stage of comprehending concrete more than abstract ideas. In addition to using the materials to represent elements, we can also use them to make ecology more real. This step will be helpful for kids who live in the city, many of whom don't get out of their neighborhood.
