Though of high school age, my students are enrolled in an early college program, and at the end of four years many earn associates' degrees along with high school diplomas. A satellite campus of Bard College in New York, and at the same time a Baltimore City public school, our school promotes writing and thinking practices that are unique to Bard's learning philosophy. Through these practices, students are writing all the time in response to a question, in draft of an essay, or merely to reflect on an excursion to a local museum. My classroom is arranged in a seminar style; each day begins with a question about which we all--the students and myself--write, and then we discuss. The space is decorated with posters from literary events that I've curated, beautiful artwork by friends and students, and many relevant, beautiful books--all to enhance the feeling of an edifying, inspiring space.
