Steve Jobs once said, "Everybody should learn to program a computer, because it teaches you how to think." Because of the educational value in learning coding and computer programming, the Virginia Board of Education made computer literacy part of the requirements for graduating high school. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and metacognition are skills that every modern student needs to master before entering the workforce. Even as early at 6th grade, my students need opportunities to learn how to think and collaborate. In small groups of two or three students, they can build and program robots. During these sessions, they will collaboratively learn how to define a problem, develop strategies for solving the problem, trying their solutions, and reflecting on what they learned. These skills cannot be taught like basic facts and information, but instead must be experienced in a dynamic learning environment. Educational funding has not caught up with the speed of technological development. This is where you come in as a donor. Your donation will help all of my students, regardless of socioeconomic status or academic backgrounds, to equitably engage in learning a skill necessary for their future.
