Despite the many obstacles and challenges in their personal lives, my students are an enthusiastic and curious bunch of seventh graders. They live in a predominantly low- income community on the west side of Chicago called Humboldt Park. My classroom is designed to give students autonomy and ownership of their learning through the use of inquiry- based projects and flexible grouping. In my several years of experience teaching in different classroom contexts, there has been one common denominator- students learn best when they are in charge and have a say in their learning! I always strive to build on my students assets while helping them to develop a deeper understanding of content. This year, I will be teaching English Language Arts and will be differentiating instruction through the use of guided reading, independent projects and the use of learning menus to maximize student learning and engagement.
