Reading is a large part of the culture of our school. Our students do not have access to technology in their home lives, so reading is a favorite pastime of most kids. Six days a week, they all work very hard on the farm. At the end of their long days (filled with German School, English School, and jobs like pre-cast, chicken barn, welding, gardening, and babysitting) the one way they wind down before bed is to escape into a book. We also spend a lot of time in the classroom reading. Since we are a classroom of five grade levels with only one teacher to go around, there is bound to be down time while waiting for the next lesson. The first thing my students do is grab a book and head to the reading corner! Currently, the floor pillows we have in our classroom are about 10 years old. They are cared for (washed and repaired) by the students and their mothers. But these pillows are very worn out. Our class would love to have a set of new floor pillows to be able to enjoy their reading time.
