Growing up, I performed in and later helped teach a number of collegiate and independent drumline programs. I was introduced to higher levels of effort, discipline, and perseverance (not to mention teamwork and FUN) than I had previously thought possible. Drummers in a drumline need to be synchronized down to the millisecond, and must spend many hours together honing their rudiments and building camaraderie before their efforts pay off in unforgettable performances. I want to be able to share with my students in Chicago a taste of the same experience I was privileged to experience through elite marching bands and drum & bugle corps. These kids are excited to drum, to learn, and to perform. Where I was fortunate to learn and teach in programs with six-figure budgets, we are more limited at my school. We have a limited band budget, a small band room, and no money for private instruction. The kids do not know the difference--they pursue their instruments with as much vigor as I did and with as much excitement as I still have. For many of them, our school band program is their first experience with the Performing Arts. I hope to create something that will live with them beyond the walls of high school and empower them to feel the pride of this musical team sport whether or not they choose to pursue a career in music. My students need marching snare drums to kickstart our new school drumline!
