I would like to implement the Orton-Gillingham approach to my students. This approach teaches students the English language and provides them with the reason why English is the way it is. This approach especially impacts students with dyslexia, but is also a very good approach for students that are below grade level. Having students break down words and really learn what origin parts of the English language came from and how to decode our language is an important aspect that allows students to become lifelong readers. By donating to my project, you have the opportunity to become lifelong learners of the English language. Teaching and providing students with a learning environment that teaches them using multi-sensory tools will help them become lifelong learners. The students in my class are very low in reading and writing. Some students can be as low as 1st grade level in these areas. By using this approach, it allows students to rise above and begin to really learn the reason why the English language is the way it is! There is a system behind the English language that most students go through the school system without ever being taught. I would like to teach them this approach so that their learning of the English language can continue even after moving to the next grade level. The highlighters allow students to highlight parts of words in specific colors to break down the word in affixes, bases, and suffixes. The colored pencils and crayolas will be used for students to keep an interactive notebook where they learn different parts of words by being able to physically draw and color pictures which will help commit it to their memory.
