The resources I am requesting for my students are simply to encourage students find their own personal getaway to get lost in a book or a personal writing piece. As a first grade teacher, I know how difficult it is to expect students to sit at their desks all day, let alone on the carpet for more than 10 minutes. Unfortunately, my classroom is equipped with tile floor throughout. Aside from the area rug in the front of the room, there are no comfortable places for students to retreat to throughout the day. Our only options are piling on the front carpet, or returning to our desks. In my experience, when students have the opportunity to get away from their desk, the "work"' no longer feels like work. Every day my students participate in a reading and writing workshop, which allows them independent time to work on reading and writing skills. As they move around the classroom, the only places to go are up against a wall, or on cold, tile, floor. Many students return to their desks and lose interest quickly. Having alternative seating options and pillows or cushions to cozy up with, I anticipate to see a change in their reading stamina, creativity, and overall desire to learn.
