In kindergarten, some of my young learners are experiencing the structure of school for the first time. Developmentally, at the ages of 5 and 6 years old, students need the freedom to move their bodies and should not be confined to a single learning style. Flexible seating will give students the chance to sit, stand, wiggle, kneel and move freely while they learn, while improving gross motor skills, core strength, and overall engagement. Each child will feel the value I place on their individual learning styles, and will know that they are loved and supported through their growth. With these seating choices, children can curl up with a book on a cushioned bath mat or sit on a yoga pillow at a coffee table. They can lean back in a bean bag chair or balance on an exercise ball while completing their math. They can sit at a tall table and let their feet dangle, all the while increasing blood flow to the brain, which increases retention. All of these seating choices enhance the comfort, flexibility and in our classroom, and lead to a more cozy feeling of home. Flexible seating allows each child to make choices based on their learning style, giving them the freedom to identify their learning needs while growing in independence. By allowing students to be comfortable and giving them a choice, I hope to increase their focus, engagement, desire and overall success.
