In the past my students have had to use their phones during labs as timers, calculators, or to check the time. This blurs the lines of when phones are okay to use in the classroom. 9th graders are too tempted by any phone use at all, and frequently end up on social media when they should have just been using a timer. My students need the proper tools to do science, so that they can put their phones away and focus on learning! My students have enjoyed labs such as timing their reflexes to learn about the nervous system, competing to pick up beads with chopsticks to model bird beak evolution, and making a 4.56 meter long timeline of the earth's 4.56 billion year history. If I had a digital clock and a class set of timers and calculators, we could improve our already engaging activities.
