My students are politically aware and civically engaged. This novel will serve as a touchstone for critical conversations and writing about race, class, and politics in my classroom. More than ever, students need texts that reflect our present historical moment in America and give cause for reflection and change. Angie Thomas' "The Hate U Give" is such a text. Through this novel, I will teach skills in critical reading, analytical writing, evidence-based argument, archival research, and civic dialogue. My students are avid readers, and this novel will be yet another book that they devour thoughtfully. 70 copies are needed for two large English classes.
