Learning opportunities that include reading help students comprehend ideas across different subjects, enabling them to make connections within a particular subject area. Language and literacy skills are fundamental to doing science. Reading, writing and speaking are all integral to comprehending scientific issues and ideas. Literacy in science is much more than just reading and writing. It involves understanding the impact science has on our world and communicating that information to the public. Outside reading is important for students of all backgrounds especially since we lack a text book. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have the resources necessary to purchase books. Unless I have a classroom set, it becomes difficult for my students to complete assignments and get the opportunity to delve deeper into Forensic Science and continue to improve their literacy skills. Both books are interesting and contain real life situations. I met Bill Bass years ago, and he is a compelling individual whose Body Farm brought world wide attention to the UT campus and to the science of Forensics. The second book, Working Stiff, is an engrossing tale of what it was like to work 9/11 as a forensic's anthropologist. Students will be able to read in the classroom or check books out to complete assignments, to delve deeper into the science itself, and improve both vocabulary and reading skills.
