Students often come to the school counseling office during escalated moments related to anger, anxiety, sadness, or social conflict. In order to create a soothing and safe space for these students, I would like to create a 'cool down corner' in my office. The cool down corner will aid in the deescalation process by providing comfortable seating, calming music, and visual cues for coping skills such as square breathing, i-messages, and using relaxation techniques. The bean bag chairs will be a key component in making the office feel welcoming, comfortable, and safe. In addition to using the bean bag chairs for deescalation, the chairs will also provide comfortable seating options for social skills groups and 1:1 counseling sessions. It is my hope that once the students leave the school counseling office they will be able to leave their worries and anger behind- thereby enabling them to focus on their learning.
