The project involves first grade students in music therapy that incorporates breathing, relaxation and focus techniques along with hand drumming. Fourth grade students were also included to learn and practice percussion using buckets and drum sticks. The fourth graders were formed into a team whose work is mindful and intentional; working together they learned basic percussion fundamentals, proper stick technique, how to read time signatures and differences between hand drumming and the use of drum sticks. I am impressed and inspired by their commitment to learning music, even without instruments. Djembe drums are uniquely culturally suited for this population of students. Durable djembes will allow students to continue learning how to strike the instrument and produce differing tones. Having an additional snare will facilitate continue teaching of proper stick technique as well and to begin to introduce reading percussion and identification of varied time signatures. My students studied and practiced for five weeks and performed several songs as participants in our school's Celebration of Cultures, on December 13th. They come from different backgrounds and classrooms, but united together to entertain and inspire everyone who saw and heard them. Many other students now desire to learn, and that is extremely rewarding.
