About 30% of the student population that I work with do not have access to basic school supplies and snacks. 4 out of 12 of my students were part of the foster care system last year. One of these students was 18 years of age and was living on his own. The materials I have asked for are specifically to support my students who come to school without eating breakfast, snacks, and school supplies. As a team, a couple of teacher including myself would buy food on a weekly basis for a group of students who come from homes where money is an issue. Cup of noodles and protein bars made a huge difference. Students felt important and more energized throughout the day. This kept a good moral and created a safe environment. The scanner is the one piece of equipment asked for that students would greatly benefit from. Some of the students either don't like typing of the computer or they don't have a computer at home. The scanner would allow the students to hand-write their assignments and scan them onto my computer where they could then turn them in via-school loop to their teachers.
