As a second grade teacher, I recognize the value of a good picture book. I have a goal to read at least one picture book to them every single day. They enjoy sitting on the carpet and hearing today's pick. The student-led discussions that come from our read-aloud time is one of my favorite times of the day. It is important to me that students in my classroom have picture books that are "mirrors" for them - a literary world where they can see characters and experiences that reflect their own identities; as well as books that become a "window" - a way for them to peek into the lives, thoughts, customs and beliefs of someone different from themselves. I am so proud of many of the student-led discussions that come from our read-aloud time. I want to give students a springboard to have more meaningful, deep conversations around diversity, acceptance, empathy and love.
