Play is a fundamental aspect of a young child's development. For a child with low motor control, it is quite the challenge to play with the typical toys that you find in a preschool classroom. In order for my students to learn through play, and they need access to toys that are adapted for use with a switch. A switch is a button that has a cord you plug into the adapted toy. The child is then able to engage in play by simply pushing the switch to activate the toy. By using a switch activated toy, these children can play with cause and effect toys along with their peers; promoting independence, social skills, and learning opportunities. Providing a switch activated toy enables a child, who is often unable to participate in play with their peers, access to everyday items that all students should be able to engage with and learn from. Their peers will enjoy playing along with these toys as well, which encourages sharing, turn taking opportunities, and inclusion. All children love to play!
