Theater and ELA 8 students will read the novel "Big Fish" to provide exposure to storytelling methods and figurative language, character types, and learn how one person can make a big difference in the lives of others . Both ELA and Theater class students will create their own stories, compare/contrast the book to the film, discuss truth and exaggeration, and perform portions of the book for their classmates to illustrate character. Students will use comic book templates to create their own magical characters and write their own comic books, inspired by tales from the book, and through character creation and study, students will increase their desire to read. Theater students will perform the full length musical, and compare story telling in a variety of forms (oral tradition, written stories, and performance). They will create convincing characters, help design costumes and props, and assist with set building. All students will be given the chance to create an alternate ending to the book as a concluding assignment.
